How to Sell a Digital Product

The process is broken down into three simple, essential parts:

  1. Part 1: Upload and Configure Your Digital File: First, you'll add the file (e.g., a PDF, ZIP, or MP3) to the system and set its rules.

  2. Part 2: Create a Product Listing to Sell the File: Next, you'll create the product page that customers will see and buy from your store.

  3. Part 3: Set Your Global Download Rules: Finally, you'll decide the store-wide rules for when customers can access their purchased files.

Let's get started.

Part 1: Upload and Configure Your Digital File

Before you can sell a digital item, you need to upload the file itself and configure its details.

Navigation Path: In your dashboard menu on the left, navigate to Products > Digital Downloads.

  • Step 1: Add a New Download
On the main Digital Downloads dashboard, click the Add download button in the top-right corner. This will take you to the configuration page for your new file.

  • Step 2: Fill in the File Details
Path: Products > Digital Downloads > Add download

    • Download name: Give your file a clear, internal name so you can easily identify it. Customers will not see this. (e.g., Beginner's Photography Guide E-book).

    • Download type: This is a crucial setting. Choose one of two options:

      1. Download file (Recommended): Select this to upload the file directly to your store's secure servers.

      2. Download link (3rd party): Select this if your file is hosted elsewhere (like Google Drive or Dropbox) and paste the direct link.

    • File: If you chose "Download file," click the Upload button to select the file from your computer.

    • Mask: This gives your download link a clean, professional name and helps with security. For example, instead of ebook_final_v2.pdf, you can set the mask to photography-guide.pdf.

  • Step 3: Add Licenses (Optional, for Software/Keys)
Path: Products > Digital Downloads > Add download > (Right-hand Column)

    • If you are selling a product that requires a unique key for each purchase (like software), click the Add license button.

    • In the pop-up, paste your list of license keys (one per line) and click Save. The system will automatically assign one key to each customer's order.

  • Step 4: Save Your File
Click the main Save button in the top-right corner. Your file is now in the system and ready to be sold.

Part 2: Create a Product Listing to Sell the File

Now that your file is uploaded, you need to create the product page that customers will see on your storefront.

Navigation Path: In the main menu, navigate to Products > Products.

  1. Click the Add product button.

  2. Fill in all the essential product details: Name, Description, Price, and upload your product Media (images/videos).

  3. Navigate to the Type & Shipping section on the product page.

  4. In the Type dropdown menu, you must change the selection from "Physical" to Digital.

  5. After selecting "Digital," a new dropdown menu will appear directly below it. Click this new dropdown and select the file you created in Part 1 (e.g., Beginner's Photography Guide E-book).

  6. Make sure the product Status (in the right-hand column) is set to Active.

  7. Click Save.

Your digital product is now officially listed for sale on your store!

Part 3: Set Your Global Download Rules

This final, important step tells the system when to give customers their download link after they've made a purchase. These are global rules that apply to all digital products.

Navigation Path: Navigate to Products > Digital Downloads and click the Settings button in the top-right corner.

A "Download settings" window will pop up. In the Auto download dropdown, choose one of two modes:

  • Mode 1: "Yes (Auto available)" - The Instant Delivery Method

    • How it works: The download link is made available to the customer instantly as soon as their Payment status is confirmed as Paid.

    • This is the recommended setting for most digital products like e-books, presets, and music files.

  • Mode 2: "No (Manual availability)" - The Advanced Control Method

    • How it works: The download link will only be activated after the order meets all of the specific conditions you set (e.g., Payment Status is Paid AND Order Status is Confirmed).

    • Use this mode for high-value items or if you need to manually verify orders before releasing the file.

After choosing your mode, click Save.

Congratulations! Your store is now fully configured to sell digital products securely and efficiently.
